I truly enjoyed The Devil's Own, a historical mystery spy thriller and the fourteenth book in Wendy Baynes' Crimes Against the Crown series. This multi-layered and intricately woven tale centres on the Eglinton Tournament of August 28-30 1839.
A hugely expensive event held in North Ayrshire, Scotland, the tournament is a spectacular reenactment of a medieval jousting match. Contestants provide authentic period armour, ladies swoon to the courtly fashions of medieval times, and Andalusian horses are requested from Spain.
Problem is, Prince Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, in exile in London after a failed French coup, is attending the festival. Louis Philippe, King of France, wants to eliminate this dangerous rival, and protect his throne during this volatile time.
Thus, under orders from Queen Victoria, elite Agents of the Crown infiltrate the tournament to protect Louis-Napoleon from assassination while he’s in Britain. They include the recurring characters Miles and Clarissa (Lissa), Lord and Lady Tinley.
Even before the group takes to the road, trouble appears in the form of “charwoman” Molly Malone, known for her murderous ways. Her family has a certain reputation.
Danger also arises from a notorious group known as The Devil’s Brigade, drawn from Catholic Irish groups, especially the 88th Regiment of Foot. Once undercover assassins in France, they arrive at the jousting match. It is vengeance they seek, with Louis-Napoleon as their target?
Lissa, Miles, their eclectic array of friends, and eccentric gypsy, Magda, must keep their wits about them during the vibrant excitement of the tournament, to solve the mystery and reveal the secret behind the hidden assassin.
No spoilers! You'll want to enjoy all the surprises yourself. Great characterization, multiple twists and turns and a well-crafted mystery make this book a joy to read.
