A Gospel of Stars by EJ LeRoy: Intense, Fun and Thought-Provoking

A Gospel of Stars by EJ LeRoy is an immersive and intriguing adventure as the story runs the gamut from cute to unspeakably cruel with page-turning finesse. Being unfamiliar with Henry's prior adventures was not an issue in reading this. I found the characters relatable and necessarily flawed, each with his own demons to fight.

Set in the intergalactic future, the story follows Henry, heir to the family spice business, a devout Christian with some knowledge of First Aid 101. His travelling companion Logan has a luridly checkered background and a quick temper, leading to some stressful situations. It's a good thing Gabrielle the therapy sanchat is on the job, and she's the cute part of the equation, a delightful and mischievous creature who easily steals the show.

But when Henry discovers a stowaway in appalling condition, things take a turn for the worse. Disagreements break out and the stowaway's experiences of torture and degradation are chronicled in unapologetic raw detail, driving poor Henry half mad as he discovers the terrible truth, rocking his faith and exposing the vicious underbelly of cosmic civilization, no matter what the species.

The author’s casual writing style draws us into the tale like a conversation ever more revealing, entwining body horror with wry humor, space prostitution and adorable monkey-cat antics as the action unfolds to an unusual and unexpected climax. This book lingers on the mind long after the end pages. Highly recommended
