Commonly referred to as Delft pottery or Delfts blauw, Delftware derives its name from the city where it was crafted. It is a type of tin-glazed earthenware renowned for its intricate, hand-painted blue-and-white designs. Initially, the styles closely mimicked imported 14th-century Chinese porcelain and Japanese Imari ware, which featured Chinoiserie and exotic animals. Over time, the designs transitioned to traditional Dutch themes such as windmills, floral patterns, biblical motifs, and landscapes.

Production reached its height between 1640 and 1740, a period when numerous factories in Delft were active to satisfy the European demand for Asian-style porcelain amid trade shortages. Although Delftware can be made in various colors, it is most renowned for its distinctive cobalt blue designs on a white background.
