Last Writes - Poems of Death & Grief by Dawn Colclasure - Expressive, Raw, Relatable
Last Writes is a collection of poetry on the difficult subjects of death, grief and raw emotion. This is the first of Colclasure's poetry collections I've read. It was a random selection from among this prolific writer's many intriguing works, and turned out to be a highly relatable read for me, as some years ago I also suddenly lost someone I deeply loved.

Most of these poems were composed when the author was personally dealing with these emotions following the death of a loved one. Poems are written in direct, modern style, speaking candidly to the reader.
The initial section of this book explores various perspectives on and rites of death, as well as the ongoing human propensity to engage in negotiations, or "bargain" with an inevitable force. The subsequent section, The Mourning After, comprises poems about grief, loss, and bereavement.
Poems like Why?! plead with the unreasonable, the incredible, building from questions to a cry of raw pain. Some, like I Will Look For You, delve into hope for resolution through the chaos of loss. I found many, such as The Shadow of Grief, resonated with my own experiences.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who has dealt or is dealing with grief and loss. It's a difficult process and we must all take our own time, and face these wretched demons in our own way. Colclasure does it with courage and passion, and opens up her own vulnerabilities to the reader. I will certainly read more from this author.
